Được lời khuyến khích của nhà xuất bản, tôi bắt tay ngay vào việc biên soạn "Bảy đại triết gia Trung Quốc đời Chu Tần". với mục đích giới thiệu tổng quát, bảy vị thánh hiền cổ xưa là: Khổng Tử, Lão Tử, Mạnh Tử, Trang Tử, Tuân Tử, Mặc Tử và Hàn Phi Tử, tiêu biểu cho triết học Trung Hoa truyền thống, có ảnh hưởng vô cùng lớn lao đến nền văn hóa và đời sống văn minh của quốc gia, dân tộc Trung Hoa.

Đã là giới thiệu tổng quát, thì chỉ điểm qua thân thế, sự nghiệp và luận thuyết chính yếu của các nhân vật đó, trong khuôn khổ giới hạn thôi. Nếu muốn đi sâu vào các luận đề học thuyết tương quan, thì cần phải nghiên cứu thêm nhiều tác phẩm của các triết gia đó, cùng những bài bình luận của các học giả đời nay.

Để độc giả khỏi phải mất quá nhiều thời giờ, khi đọc cuốn sách này, tôi tự yêu cầu phải soạn theo những điều kiện sau đây:

• Phần giới thiệu cuộc đời của các nhân vật đó, tuy vắn tắt, nhưng không bỏ sót những tao ngộ hệ trọng.
• Phần luận thuyết của các nhân vật đó, không nên diễn tả quá dài dòng, nhưng phải tương đối đầy đủ, để giúp người đọc thấy rõ tư tưởng của triết gia đó, thuộc học phái nào, đạo nào.
• Giảm đến mức tối thiểu, trường hợp trích dẫn lời nói của nhân vật tương quan, bằng cổ văn Hán tự.
• Cố gắng hành văn cho ngắn gọn, giản dị, để độc giả thanh niên hải ngoại dễ hiểu.

Ý nghĩ của tôi như vậy đúng hay sai, và đã làm được tới mức nào, mong quý vị Hán học cao minh lão thành. chẳng tiếc lời vàng ngọc chỉ giáo cho.

Lão Tử họ Lý, tên Nhĩ, tự Bá Dương, người Khổ huyện, nước Sở, sinh vào đầu năm Chu Linh Vương, khoảng 570 tr. CN tuy cùng thời với Khổng Tử, nhưng lớn hơn mười chín tuổi. Một việc mà người đời sau hay nhắc tới, là có lần Khổng Tử thỉnh giáo cùng Lão Tử. Cứ theo sách cổ ghi lại, thì nội dung cuộc hội đàm đó như sau (dịch theo ý chính cổ văn Hán):

Khổng Tử thưa: "Khâu tôi nghiên soạn Lục kinh: Thi, Thư, Lễ, Nhạc, Dịch và Xuân Thu. Tự coi đó là văn hiến lâu đời, biết đâu lại là đồ cũ. Đến với những bảy mươi hai vì vua, tham luận về đạo lý của tiên vương, giới bày về thành quả của đương triều, song chẳng được vị nào áp dụng cả. Đáng tiếc thay, sao người ta khó khuyên bảo thế, đạo lý khó sáng tỏ thế”

Lão Tử đáp: "(Bởi vì) những gì mà Ngài đưa ra trình bày, xương cốt của những người đó đã mục nát lâu rồi, chỉ còn lời nói ghi lại thôi. Cũng may là Ngài chưa gặp được vị nào gọi là vua tế thế. Lục kinh của Ngài đều là những vết cũ của tiên vương... Vết là do dấu chân đã qua mà để lại, nhưng vết là vết, chứ đâu phải bước chân đi? Nếu Nhân Nghĩa là ngôi nhà cổ của tiên vương, thì ta chỉ có thể trọ tạm một đêm thôi, chớ nên ở lâu... Nếu cứ để cho Nhân Nghĩa ăn sâu vào lòng, là làm rối thêm lòng, tai hại lớn đấy . Tôi có nghe, người ta đem vật quý giấu dưới chân tường đổ nát, quân tử có đức cao, thì dáng trông như đần độn vậy. Thôi, hãy bỏ cái khí phách kiêu hãnh và lòng ước muốn của Ngài đi. Phong cao chí lớn, đều vô bồ cho bản thân. Lời tôi khuyến cáo Ngài, chỉ có bấy nhiêu đó thôi".

Mạnh Tử họ Mạnh tên Kha, tự Tử Dư, sanh vào năm thứ tư Chu liệt Vương, 372 tr. CN. Sau 107 năm, tính từ khi Khổng Tử qua đời. Người ta được biết về thân thế của Mạnh Tử, có phần ít hơn Khổng Tử, nhất là chẳng ai được rõ đời sống thời thơ ấu của Người ra sao. Tục truyền về truyện "Mạnh mẫu (mẹ thân sanh Mạnh Tử) tam thiên". (Để chọn láng giềng tốt cho Mạnh Tử, bà mẹ đã phải dời chỗ ở những ba lần), theo kết quả khảo cứu, thì chẳng có sự thật đó.

Mạnh Tử vốn là hậu duệ của Mạnh Tôn, thuộc dòng dõi Lỗ công, vì đã di cư sang xứ Châu (nước nhỏ phụ thuộc vào Lỗ), nên coi như là người Châu. Mạnh Tử theo học thầy Tử Tư từ thuở trẻ (Tử Tư là cháu nội của Khổng Tử), bình sinh lấy việc tuyên dương đạo Khổng làm chí hướng, cho nên đến thời trung niên, cũng như Khổng Tử đời trước, chu du qua nhiều nước như Tống, Tuyết, Tề, Nguỵ, Lỗ, Châu, Lương v.v... Căn cứ theo sách "Mạnh Tử", thì những nhân vật chính trị đương quyền mà Mạnh Tử đã được tiếp xúc là Lương Huệ Vương, Lương Tương Vương, Tề Tuyên Vương, Châu Mục Công và Đằng Văn Công.

Trong lịch trình chu du liệt quốc, Mạnh Tử đến nước Lương vào năm 320 tr. CN bởi lúc đó, Lương Huệ Vương đang chiêu sính hiền sĩ bốn phương. Khi Mạnh Tử bệ kiến Lương Huệ Vương, câu đầu tiên vua Lương nêu ra ngay, là vấn đề có tính cách tiêu biểu cho các quốc gia đương thời: "Hà dĩ lợi ngô quốc?" (Làm sao để có lợi cho nước ta?). Đứng vào lập trường của nhà cầm quyền, Lương Huệ Vương coi trọng vấn đề công lợi vì nước, chẳng có gì là sái cả, nhưng với một hiền sĩ coi nhân nghĩa là lý tưởng cao cả nhất như Mạnh Tử, thì đó là điều hại, cho nên đã xây ra cuộc tranh luận dữ dội về Nghĩa và Lợi, giữa Lương huệ Vương cùng Mạnh Tử. Khi đã kiên trì giá trị Nhân Nghĩa cao hơn công lợi, thì lời của Mạnh Tử không thể nghe lọt vào tai vua Lương được, Người đành tạm thời lưu lại nước Lương, để chờ cơ duyên khác. Sang năm sau Huệ Vương mất, con là Tương Vương lên kế vị, Mạnh Tử lại được triệu kiến vấn chính, nhưng đã bỏ Lương sang Tề, bởi hoàn toàn thất vọng với Lương tương Vương, "Trông thì chẳng giống một vị chúa, gần thì chẳng thấy có uy nghi tí nào” như lời Mạnh Tử đã đánh giá.

Hàn Phi, phỏng chừng sinh vào năm 280 trước CN. vốn thuộc dòng dõi quý tộc nước Hàn, tuy có theo hợc đạo Nho dưới môn Tuân Tử cùng Lý Tư, nhưng lại có tư tưởng khác biệt với thầy. About the book: 

America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It (ISBN 0-89526-078-6) is a nonfiction book by Mark Steyn, published in 2006. It forecasts the downfall of Western civilization owing to internal weaknesses and the increasing Muslim population in Western countries and the world generally.

America Alone is set in the context of the global war on terror. 

Steyn argues that "much of what we loosely call the Western world will not survive the twenty-first century, and much of it will effectively disappear within our lifetimes, including many if not most European countries."

Steyn attributes the forecast fall of the Western world to three factors:

• Demographic decline, based on the observation that European nations have low birth rates while Muslim nations have higher birth rates. Specifically, in recent years the population of the developed world declined from about 30% of world population to around 20%, while the population of Muslim nations increased from about 15% to 20%.

• The unsustainability of the advanced Western social-democratic state, based on the thesis that the responsibilities of normal adults, such as care of the elderly, childcare, health care and insurance, have been slowly taken over by the state. Steyn argues that these programs erode humanity's basic sense of self-reliance to a point at which a more resilient group of people — Muslims in his view — will take control.
• The exhaustion of civilization. Steyn argues that Western nations are so focused on moral and cultural relativism—with "diversity" and "racism" as their new favorite words—that they are unable to see that their existence is threatened. Specifically, he argues that European nations have given up defending themselves and rely on America for their defense. He views anti-Americanism as a symptom of civilisational exhaustion, whether manifested by Muslims (to whom America symbolizes gay porn, children born out of wedlock, immodest women, and immorality) or by Europeans (to whom America symbolizes a crude and radical Christianity, fat rednecks and uncontrolled firearms). However in his view America is the most benign hegemonic power the world has ever seen. According to Steyn, America will be the last and only country—as all others will be taken over by Muslims—that will retain its sense of self-preservation, but this is not a given, as America's enemies know that it ran from Vietnam and they hope that America will continue to flee when faced with a challenge.

Steyn's final argument is that the Muslim world will not need to carry out an outright attack. Instead, Europe will collapse from "wimpiness" or "multicultural 'sensitivity,'" leading to betrayal of the state's core values. Thus, during the Danish 'cartoon jihad' of 2006, Jack Straw, then British foreign secretary, hailed the 'sensitivity' of Fleet Street in not reprinting the offending representations of the Prophet."

In his first book on this subject, The Soviet Union and the Vietnam War (1996), Ilya Gaiduk harvested a great deal of fascinating data from previously closed communist archives and produced a volume on Soviet involvement in Vietnam and communist coalitional dynamics that has few if any peers in the literature. About the Authors:
His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso was born in 1935 to a peasant family in northeastern Tibet. The world's foremost Buddhist leader, he travels extensively, speaking eloquently in favor of ecumenical understanding, kindness and compassion, respect for the environment and, above all, world peace.
Jeffrey Hopkins, Ph. D. served for a decade as the interpreter for the Dalai Lama. A Buddhist scholar and the author of more than thirty-five books and translations, he is emeritus professor for Tibetan and Buddhist studies at the University of Virginia.
